Vintage Bengali Kantha
This beautiful quilt is around 80 years old and is a particularly fine example of West Bengali kantha work. Traditional motifs of flowers, animals and birds are featured, with tiny running stitches covering the whole piece.
Kantha is one of the oldest forms of embroidery on the sub-continent, and the art as we know it today has been practised for around 500 years. Kantha quilts will typically feature objects from nature, but can also depict social, cultural or religious imagery.
They are usually made from cast-off saris or dhotis, predominantly white.
The simple running stitch used in quilting produces an embroidery-like design whose detail is filled in with satin and stem stitch.
It would make a vibrant addition to a bedroom as a throw or quilt, or to add some colour to a living area.
This unique piece was acquired as a collector’s item, so needs to be treated with care!
