Mashru Striped cushion cover

New product

Hand printed and hand-woven mashru zip-closed cushion cover from Patan, Gujarat

More details

The term 'mashru' means 'permitted'. The Quran forbade its male adherents to wear pure silk, and with its cotton underside and silk face, the wearing of mashru circumvented this proscription. There are only a few places where handwoven mashru is still made - our fabrics come from the Patan village in Gujarat, where they are woven on a wooden pit loom. Rayon 'art silk' has replaced the traditional mulberry silk, and the reverse side is pure cotton. Typically the fabrics are either a vibrant stripe as in this piece, or handprinted with small chevrons and ikat.

The soft sheen of the art silk makes a beautiful accessory for either the bedroom or living room.

The fabric is robust enough to withstand wear and tear, and washes well in cool to lukewarm temperatures.

Cover size is 35cm x 35cm, suitable for an insert of a maximum size of 41cm x 41cm (the tighter the fit, the rounder and puffier!)
